Makers of Frames
Great piece by Liz Danzico on designing "frames."
Kevin Lynch did extensive research on a very similar topic for his 1960s work, The Image of the City where he studied how users perceive and organize spatial information as they navigate through cities. He found that we all form mental maps around five elements (or frames): paths, edges, districts, nodes, and landmarks. This has had a great influence on wayfinding, urban planning, and architecture and now interaction design.
